About Iowa Bass Nation

Since the early 70's Iowa B.A.S.S. Nation has provided a Grassroots connection to Bass Anglers Sportsman Society.  With clubs across the state of Iowa we provide many avenues to compete in bass fishing tournaments throughout the state of Iowa.  With an opportunity to advance on to regional and national tournaments run B.A.S.S.  Our members have the opportunity to advance to the highest level of the tournament ranks as the professionals and compete with the pros on the biggest stage in bass fishing, the Bassmasters Classic.

For more than 30 years, the B.A.S.S. Nation has been more than a name. It has been a community united by a sense of camaraderie and a spirit of belonging to something unique that carries from generation to generation. Over the years, members have decided to join the B.A.S.S. Nation for many reasons other than exciting tournament fishing. The vision of true pioneers in our history — Ray Scott, Don ...Butler and many others — established conservation and a focus on building youth programs in addition to fishing competitions as areas critical to the viability of the sport and our lifestyle. B.A.S.S. Nation members, as well as B.A.S.S. employees and sponsors, have given tirelessly to the sport and the vision of these pioneers.

Rising through the ranks of the B.A.S.S. Nation to compete in bass fishing's most prestigious tournament takes dedication and perseverance, but the rewards for advancing to the next level are great. The steps from local club to Classic are presented below:

CLUBS AND STATE CHAPTERS:  Anglers qualify through their local clubs for the State Team Qualifier Tournaments. Local clubs along with the State Chapter determine the qualifying format on the state level. The State Chapters of the B.A.S.S. Nation hold State Team Qualifier(s) to qualify a 12-person team plus two juniors and two alternates.  States determine the qualifier format for their state.

DIVISIONALS:  B.A.S.S. invites each B.A.S.S. Nation state chapter to bring a 12-person team plus two juniors and two alternates to one of 6 (six) B.A.S.S. Nation Divisionals. Format of the divisional are determined by B.A.S.S. The purpose of the divisional is to qualify one person from each state for the B.A.S.S.  Nation Championship. The divisional is a "team" tournament. Prizes are awarded to the teams only. The highest finishing person from each team will qualify for the B.A.S.S. Federation Nation Championship.

B.A.S.S. NATION CHAMPIONSHIP:  Currently 47 B.A.S.S. State Nations and seven B.A.S.S. International Nations compete within one of the 6 (six) divisions to qualify for the Bassmaster Classic. The anglers compete individually in this tournament to determine a champion, however, the highest finishing angler within each of the 6 (six) divisions will earn a berth into the Bassmaster Classic.

BASSMASTER CLASSIC:  6 (six) anglers qualify through the B.A.S.S. Nation Championship to fish the Bassmaster Classic.

Thomas (Tom) L. Bowler, 67, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 26, 2014 at Crossing Rivers Health Hospice in Prairie du Chien, WI following a courageous battle with cancer.

Born June 10, 1947 in Marengo, IA, the son of George H. and Earleen (Knock) Bowler, Tom grew up in the Hiawatha/Cedar Rapids, IA area where he graduated from Washington High School. In his early years, he worked with his father in Bowler Construction and, later, in real estate and insurance.

Tom’s integrity, loyalty, and easy-going nature earned him the respect of all those who knew him; people who met him once remembered him always. Tom was an avid outdoorsman who especially enjoyed bass fishing and duck hunting. He was happiest when he was fishing on the Mississippi River or operating construction equipment on his property. His affiliations were many but those of which he was most proud include: President of the Iowa B.A.S.S. Federation Nation for over 30 years, lifetime member of B.A.S.S., active member of Ducks Unlimited of Iowa and Pheasants Forever, the Iowa Association of Realtors, the Masonic Lodge, and patron of Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Cedar Rapids.

He is lovingly remembered by his daughter, Jill Bowler-Petersen of Cedar Rapids, IA; son, Jamie (Tara) Bowler of Marion, IA; his significant other of over 24 years, Judy O’Kane of Prairie du Chien and her son, Kyle (Jen) Schmidt of Arlington Heights, IL; grandchildren Taylor Petersen, Kaden Bowler, and Katelynn Bowler; a sister, Pat (Don) Auman of Marion, IA; brothers-in-law Jack (Twyla) O’Kane of Crossville, TN and Jerry (Marjorie) O’Kane of Penn Valley, CA; sister-in-law Sherry O’Kane of Largo, FL; an uncle, Bob Bowler of Phoenix, AZ; aunts Lela (Keith) Reif of Cedar Rapids and Jeanette Elgin of Center Point; numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins; countless friends; and his constant companion, “Socks”, the cat. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Jim O’Kane; and his Golden Retriever, “Red”.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 23rd, 2014 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. immediately followed by a Celebration of Life Memorial at 7:00 p.m. at the Garrity Funeral Home (704 S. Ohio Street) in Prairie du Chien, WI.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to ARC of East Central Iowa (680 2nd St. SE, Suite 200, Cedar Rapids, IA 52401); Camp Courageous (P.O. Box 418, Monticello, IA 52310); Make A Wish Foundation of Iowa (3024 104th St., Urbandale, IA 50322); or a charity of your choice in his memory
